Walter Severn (1830-1904), one of the founders of the Dudley Gallery, watercolour
landscape artist : father of artists Christian, Cecil and Nigel Severin.
Walter's father, Joseph Severn (1793-1879), was a highly regarded artist and latterly
British Consul in Rome ( Joseph Severn was an intimate friend of John Keats -
the poet - whom he accompanied to Italy in 1820, and nursed until death in 1821:
Joseph Severn was buried in Rome alongside the grave of John Keats )
Walter's brother Arthur Severn (1848-1931) was a landscape and marine painter,
mostly in watercolour - he married Joan Agnew a cousin of John Ruskin,
who became a close friend ; whilst his sister Lady Ann Mary Newton (1832-1866),
who died from measles when aged 34, was a highly accomplished portrait painter
as well as wife of the archaeologist Sir Charles Newton.
Paintings from the Severn family were regularly exhibited : their artistic connections
ensure their own special place in theVictorian and Edwardian art world.
